Once your child starts Nursery and they get to know staff, they will be allocated a key person in the first few weeks. Your child's key person will seek to build positive relationships with your child to help them feel safe and secure by responding sensitively to their feelings and sensitively meeting their emotional needs. They will support children's physical needs too, helping them with things like nappy changing, toileting and dressing. Your child's key person is always available and is first point of contact for parents.
My Learning Journey
Each child's key person keeps a detailed record of their progress in a file called 'My Learning Journey'. We hope that you will be able to add to this file and become involved in creating a wonderful learning journey for your child. By observing, reflecting and evaluating we can create learning experiences which are geared specifically to each individual.
The right start
We at Hillside aim to create a stimulating and challenging environment which is warm, friendly and an extension of home where children and adults are welcome and together have fun, play, talk and learn together.
Starting nursery is a huge milestone within a child's life, as they begin their first steps into the larger world. By working together with families we can create a strong foundation for a child to grow.
Comings and goings
At first school may seem like a very big, strange place to your child. Time is spent on really settling in, this time is well invested and it is only when a child feels happy and settled that they will be able to learn.
It is really important to collect your children on time - searching the sea of faces for your mum or dad, nana or granddad and finding no-one there can be really upsetting when you are only 2, 3 or 4 years old.
Please ensure that your children are brought right into the Nursery and are collected by an adult they know and who are known to us. To ensure all our children are safeguarded we run a password system and you must let us know if someone different is collecting and the person collecting must have the password when they arrive.
What did you do at nursery today?
Common answers to this question include 'don't know', 'nothing', 'I played all day' - sometimes they may bring home paintings or drawings or something that they have made but, often their learning has nothing to show for it, it is invisible.
High quality education is about much more than colours, shapes, numbers and letters. It's about learning to be independent, confident, strong and curious. It's about developing children's natural joy and wonder at the work they live in. It's about having a positive attitude, forming positive relationships and believing in yourself. If children can learn to 'have a go', learn from mistakes and try again, they will succeed in their future learning.
Young children learn by doing things for themselves, by exploring and investigating, watching and listening, talking and discussing, creating and communicating - in other words - playing.
The Early Years Curriculum
Young children learn from everything around them - people, places, routines, experiences. All these aspects are woven together in the learning opportunities that we offer.
We provide a rich and varied curriculum designed to challenge and inspire, by giving the children first-hand experiences to develop their understanding of themselves and the world around them.
Playing and learning can be a very messy business! Although aprons and outdoor clothing are provided for certain activities - accidents can also happen.
Please remember that laces can be difficult and frustrating for a child who is struggling to become independent. Velcro or slip buckles are more manageable.
Please dress children in suitable practical clothing which they can manage themselves when undressing or using the toilet.
Please clearly label items of clothing which your child is likely to take off. It can be upsetting for children to be unable to find their jumper at the end of the day.
Encourage your child to dress and undress even though it will take a little longer, especially taking off their coats, hanging them up and putting them on.
All children experience outdoor learning in our Forest School which promotes exploration, curiosity and creativity through hands on learning experiences using natural resources for inspiration. We invite parents to come and share the experience each term.
During the sessions the children eagerly explore the seasons, animals, plants, trees, mud and fields! At the start of the session the children set off on a journey with their forest school leader who captures their curiosity with a range of experiences which explore the natural world and together share the wonders of nature.
We have a snack each session for the children where they are offered water or milk and a healthy snack which is usually fruit or vegetables. It could be apple, carrots, bananas, grapes etc.
