Hillside Nursery School

British Values and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development


Here at Hillside Nursery we believe that children should be given the opportunity to explore the issue of diversity and understand Britain as a multi-cultural society. Therefore we promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.


We believe that the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and our pedagogical approach (i.e. our approach for supporting teaching and learning) already provides a solid foundation to encourage a child’s understanding and acceptance that we live in diverse communities with many different cultures and lifestyles.


Children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedom. Children’s personal and social development is of paramount importance. Without self-confidence and self-esteem children cannot be effective learners and citizens of their community.

As a school we will actively promote fundamental British Values:


We listen to the children’s and parent’s voices. We promote a sense of belonging to the school community, where we seek to take account of each other’s views, and where members of the community are expected to contribute and co-operate.


The Rule of Law

We consistently reinforce our high expectations of children. Children are taught the value and the reasons behind our expectations (rules): that they are there to protect us, that everyone has responsibilities and that there are consequences when rules are broken. Our school Behaviour Policy supports these values.  The expectation for learning behaviours is high and children construct rules for their behaviour they expect from themselves and each other. Our simple expectations are clearly displayed and are revisited each term as new children join us. Adults in the Nursery constantly use these expectations in their everyday work with the children and expect children to know and use these expectations to evolve mutual respect and to learn right from wrong. All of these teach children to be kind, helpful and respectful of others.


Individual Liberty

Within nursery children are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. We educate, and provide boundaries for the children so that they can make choices safely. Children are supported to understand their own rights and freedom.


 Mutual Respect

The ethos of Hillside Nursery School is based on core values, one of which is respect. We expect children to learn to care for others, to share and to listen to each other. Staff help children to understand how to respect by talking about how actions and words can affect others, and by modelling this in their relationships with each other.  They teach children to respect the natural environment and learn about the world in which they live.


Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

 We aim to enhance children’s understanding of different beliefs, faiths and values. Tolerance is shown by the way in which staff, children and families work, play and interact with each other.


The curriculum is planned specifically to be inclusive by celebrating a range of cultural festivals throughout the year. We encourage parents and carers to support and participate in our events together as a community. Children have the opportunity to dress up in clothes and try different foods, listen to multi-cultural music, read books and play with multicultural resources that reflect a range of different cultures. We acknowledge, recognise and discuss the similarities and differences that exist amongst us all. It is our aim to develop empathy and understanding, to make everyone at Hillside Nursery School feel valued and respected to encourage appreciation, respect and tolerance.
